What Can I Do With A Degree In Geography?



The department of Geography offers three and four year Bachelor of Arts degrees in French and English.  The three year general program may be taken as a single or combined concentration, while the four year honors program may be taken as a single or combined specialization.  A Certificate in Applied Geography is available to students with an overall average of 70% in selected courses.  An Honours Diploma is also offered to students who have completed their general degree and wish to upgrade to a four year honors.  Further, the department offers an Honours Earth Science Program.  Please see the department link below for further information on programs and course descriptions.

Skills developed:

  • Knowledge in the fields of regional resource development and urban planning
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with quantitative methods of analysis and related software
  • Understanding of various geographies in relation to economics and politics
  • Understanding of environmental concerns and related policy
  • Familiarity with cartography, remote sensing of the environment, and GIS.
  • Multidisciplinary approach in the design and analysis of problem solving

Areas of employment

Laurentian Geography graduates have found careers in areas like education, the environment, resource planning/development, mapping, and more.  In Canada a small majority of graduates are employed as secondary and elementary school teachers and counselors.  A minority find employment as physical science professionals.

Work prospects

Graduates of the of the social sciences at Laurentian average a 98% employment rate two years after entry into the work force.  In Canada the average yearly earnings for those with a Geography degree is approximately $36,500.  However salaries vary significantly according to area of specialization, location, and general work experience.  Approximately 84% of graduates claim job satisfaction, while 77% would choose to make the same education choice again.

Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with the majority of competition coming from Geology majors.
