What Can I Do With A Degree In Sociology?



The Department of Sociology offers a three and four year Bachelor of Arts program as well as Masters Degree.  The three year program may be taken in single or combined concentration, while the four year is available as a single or combined specialization.  An Honours Diploma is offered to students with a three year B.A. who wish to upgrade to a four year Honours.  Further, a Qualifying year is available to students with a three year B.A. who wish to pursue a graduate studies. Finally, a Certificate of Family Life Studies and Human Sexuality is open to students on a full or part time basis.  Programs are offered in French and English.  Please see the department link below for further information on programs and course descriptions:

Skills developed:

  • Multidisciplinary knowledge (ex. philosophy, psychology, religion, and history)
  • Appreciation of the relationship between the individual and society
  • Critical thinking from a sociological perspective
  • Knowledge of the scientific method and analysis
  • Strong communication skills (written, spoken, interpersonal, and presentation)
  • Appreciation of diversity
  • Strong ethics
Graduates generally qualify for employment in business and government in areas like human services, criminal justice, research, and education.  Laurentian graduates have found careers in administration, health services, social work, and teaching.  In Canada roughly 13% of graduates are employed as Paralegals and Social Services Workers.

Work prospects

The average rate of employment for Laurentian graduates in the social sciences is 98% two years after entry into the work force.  In Canada the average yearly earnings for those with a Sociology degree is approximately $30,500.  However pay varies greatly with location, specialization, and level of experience.  Job satisfaction among graduates is roughly 78%, while 59% would choose to make the same educational choice again.

Work prospects are fair.  Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with the majority of competition coming from other graduates in Political Science, Economics, Social Work, and Psychology.
