What Can I Do With A Degree In Psychology?



The Department of Psychology offers two four year degrees; a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science (Honours).  The four year B.A. may be taken as an honors, single, or combined specialization.  The three year degree may be taken as a general or combined concentration.  An Honors Diploma is available to students who have completed their three year BA and wish to upgrade their degree to a four year honours.  Courses are offered in French and English.  Please see the department link below for further information.

Note:  Laurentian offers a Masters in degree in Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Human Development.  Additional programs are available in Behavioral Neuroscience (BS), and Sports Psychology ((BA) School of Human Kinetics

Areas of employment

Psychology graduates generally qualify for employment in business and government in areas like human resources, administration, research, and education.  In a Canada a small majority of graduates find employment as paralegals and social service workers.  Other common avenues include careers in counseling, mental health, corrections, and sales.

Work prospects

The average rate of employment for Laurentian graduates in the social sciences is 98% two years after entry into the work force.  In Canada the average yearly earnings for those with a Psychology degree is approximately $31,300.  However pay varies greatly with location, specialization, and level of experience.  Job satisfaction among graduates is roughly 89%, while 69% would choose to make the same educational choice again.

Work prospects are fair.  Competition among new graduates is expected to be average with the majority of competition coming from other graduates in Education, Sociology, and Social Work.
