Crime, Punishment and Modernity

This course explores contemporary sociological theories of crime and punishment with specific emphasis on comparing the modern era with traditional practices. We will explore how contemporary societies sanitize, normalize and neutralize traditional practices of discipline and punishment in order to make them palatable to modern sensibilities.
